Alastair West is UNIDO's Coordinator for the African Union's Business Plan to accelerate implementation of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa. He holds a degree in Biochemistry from Oxford University and an MBA fromIMD in Switzerland. The first eightyears of his career were spent working in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. After his MBA he joined the World Bank as part of the vaccine team in Washington DC and later worked for the International Finance Corporation as Industry Expert for Life Sciences in the General Services and Manufacturing Division. He has been with UNIDO for 10years and has worked on a number of pharmaceutical industry projects in Africa. As part of this work he co-authored the BusinessPlan for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa, represented UNIDO on theExpert Advisory Group for the Secretary General's High Level Panel on Access to Medicines and has worked in different African members states and Regional Economic Communities to developand implementtechnical and organizational solutions to support the development of the pharmaceutical industry on the continent
